On May 12, 2011 the Tri-Cities Early Childhood Development Committee was pleased to host their second Tri-Cities Champions for Young Children Awards of Excellence Event at Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club. The event was well attended and once again featured entertainment from the Coastal Sound Music Academy Novisingers!
The Village Toy Shop won the Business Champion Award of Excellence which was presented to Kirsten Anderson, owner. The Village Toy Shop is family friendly, community oriented and takes great care to sell products that promote play and learning through play. They have also generously donated train tables to the Port Moody Public Library and the Eagleridge Hospital.

Maureen Dockendorf, Assistant Superintendent, School District #43 |
Maureen Dockendorf, Assistant Superintendent for School District #43, was named as the Leadership Champion for 2011. Maureen Dockendorf knows the importance of building relationships in the community in order to do what is best for kids and truly understands the importance of community development. Maureen has been a strong leader within the School District and the Tri-Cities and also at the Provincial Level.

The Champion for Children Who Have Special Needs for 2011, is Brenda Horton. Brenda has her own Physiotherapy Clinic, called Kidsfirst Physio. Brenda Horton understands play and the importance of using it in a therapy setting. Because of her innovate approach, she has had significant successes and break-throughs with many of the children and families she works with. Brenda never gives up and strives to provide the best care to each child she works with.

The Little Scholars YMCA Daycare was named as the Champion Group Winner. Little Scholars works with infants and toddlers and their teen parents. The work they do gives parents the support and skills they need to be parents, and gives the children an outstanding child care experience. The program has continued to evolve since its establishment in 1993 and is seen by the child care community as a model program.

Jennifer Durkin - 2011 Individual Champion Winner |
Jennifer Durkin won for the 2011 Individual Champion. Jennifer Durkin has been in the field for over 35 years and she still loves what she does at the Kiddies Korner preschool in Port Coquitlam. Jennifer believes strongly in letting children explore for themselves to structure their own learning through play. She is a highly respected early childhood educator in our community and truly a mentor to others in the field.
